Thanksgiving is coming up so quickly… I can’t even believe that it’s already November. With Halloween over and all things fall in the air, it’s time to get ready for the next big holiday! These Mexican Hot Chocolate OREO Cookie Balls are the perfect treat to enjoy at your Thanksgiving celebration, but they also make the perfect hostess gift or even a place card at your holiday dinner… seriously!
To start, you’ll want to head to your local Walmart store and pick up OREO cookies (the original recipe uses plain OREO cookies, but you can spice up the flavor with any other variety except Double Stuf. I used Brownie Batter OREO cookies for my Mexican hot chocolate OREO cookie balls, to add that extra chocolate flavor). You also need a package of Philadelphia Cream Cheese (plain works fine, but I used Brown Sugar Cinnamon to evoke the spices of Mexican hot cocoa), and some chocolate or white chocolate. To make your mugs, you’ll want some pretty, dark ceramic mugs and a paint pen.
Soften your cream cheese before you get started, then grab 36 cookies. If you’re using one of the special limited edition flavors, you’ll need just about 2 packages– just get 36 cookies from the package.
You’ll need to crush your cookies into a fine powder. I started mine in a bag with a rolling pin, then finished them off in a food processor, but as long as you get them into a fine powder, you can make them however you’d like!
Scoop your cream cheese into your OREO cookie crumbs, then combine the two ingredients thoroughly. Roll the mixture into one-inch balls– you’ll get 48 of them.
Pop them into the freezer for 10 minutes, and in the meantime, melt some white chocolate. Then dip each OREO cookie ball into the chocolate and place it on waxed paper. I topped mine with a sprinkling of raw sugar, but you can top them with candy cane bits, pieces of additional broken OREO cookies, sprinkles, or even a little hot cocoa powder. Pop the OREO cookie balls into the refrigerator for an hour, or until the cookie balls are firm.
While your OREO cookie balls chill, you can make your mugs. These are perfect for teacher gifts, place cards for your guests at Thanksgiving, hostess gifts if you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving yourself, and more– they really are an easy, delicious, simple gift that everyone will love. Start by tracing out your desired name or phrase using a pencil. Then, go over it using a paint pen in your desired color– I liked the contrast of the gold on the brown-black mugs. Let it dry completely– your mug will be hand-wash only with the paint pen. Be sure to keep your design to the outside of the mug, near the bottom, away from where the mouth will go, because the paint pen is not food safe.
Place baggies in a mug and fill them with your favorite hot cocoa mix– I make mine using 2 pounds of powdered milk, 4 pounds of powdered sugar, 1 pound of coffee creamer, and 1 cup of baking cocoa. This makes over 80 1/3 cup servings. I was able to fit 3 1/3 cup servings inside of the baggie in my mug.
When it’s time to serve, place OREO cookie balls on top of the cocoa and gift it to your favorite people. If you’re transporting them, I’d wrap them up to keep them safe.
But seriously, these rich little treats are perfect for anyone to try, and I love these sweet treats for sharing with everyone. Since they’re so poppable, it’s a perfect gift for everyone. Because they make a decently large batch, you can even take them for a cookie exchange instead!
