Bee-do-bee-do-bee-do… In case you didn’t know it yet, your favorite yellow little creatures are coming out on DVD tomorrow, and I know we’ve already pre-ordered the Minions movie. That meant making the perfect dessert for our Minions watch party, and trust me, you’re going to love this one. Take a break from holiday stress and make these delightful minion mini cakes for your family to enjoy during the movie!
To make your cakes, head to Target and grab some Market Pantry butter, blueberry pie filling, and a vanilla cake mix. If your store sells fresh produce, you’ll also want to grab some bananas. That’s all you’ll need for these mini cakes and the no-churn mock ice cream that goes with it!
While you’re at Target, pick up your copy of the Minions Metalpak Blu-Ray/DVD combo. It’s a Target exclusive, with tons of extra bonus content! Plus, if you pre-order it online, you’ll get a $5 gift card (pssst… this is true for any movie you pre-order on Target.com!)
The thing I love about shopping at Target is that they’re a one-stop-shop for all of my favorite minions gear, like toys, clothing, and books.
When you get home, you’re all set to get started making these easy cakes and ice cream. To make this “ice cream” duplicate, you’ll use two ingredients– bananas, and some of your blueberry pie filling! Start by putting two bananas, cut into pieces, and 3 Tablespoonfuls of blueberry pie filling in a blender. Then, give it a good whirrr until all ingredients are combined.
Once the bananas and blueberry pie filling are combined, pour them into a freezer-safe airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours. The great thing about this “ice cream” duplicate is that you don’t need an ice cream maker for creamy, delicious frozen treats, and because it’s made from bananas and anything else you want to add, it’s actually totally fine for a treat any time of day (even breakfast). Get creative with the fruit or additions you put in– for this one, the blueberry pie filling really sets off the cake, but don’t feel like you have to stick to that!
To make the cakes, we’ll layer them to look just like the minions in their cute little overalls! Start by putting two tablespoons full of blueberry pie filling in the bottom of each jar. Top that with 1/8th of a diced banana. Then, add 3 tablespoons of yellow cake mix– don’t prepare this according to package directions! You’ll just want the dried, powdered mix here.
Grab your butter and put a few pats of butter on each cake– about half a tablespoon each. Place these on a baking sheet and cook at 350 for about 30 minutes, until the top of the cake is bubbly and looks golden.
While your cakes are in the oven, download and print this template, with minion goggles that are designed to fit the mini canning jars pictured above. Or, make your own!
Then, color or paint them with your kids! I used silver metallic paint from Target’s Home Made Simple line, but you can use whatever paints or markers you’d like.
Pop the cakes out of the oven and let them cool for a few minutes (you’ll want to serve them warm, but let them cool off a bit from the scalding temps before you serve them, especially to little ones!)
Once they’ve cooled a bit, simply wrap the goggles around the jars and secure with a little piece of tape. And then, top with the bananaberry “ice cream” if you’d like and serve!
