There’s nothing better than a good party. I mean, sleepovers are one of the most fun parts of growing up, and even for younger kids, a daytime party is a great way to enjoy an afternoon with friends. Whether you’re setting up an afternoon play date or doing a full-blown sleepover party, tie-dye parties are so fun for all ages! So today, I’m showing you the favors, the food, everything you need to have the most dye-lightful tie-dye party ever.
Tie-Dye Party Food
Tie-dye party food deserves a whole lot of fun without a ton of effort. One of my favorite treats for this kind of party is to make tie-dye cupcakes! You can purchase pre-colored packaged mixes, or you can divide and dye your favorite white cake mix. I picked three bright colors that I thought worked really well together, but get creative and go with your child’s favorite colors for their party!
Place your mixes in piping bags, then layer them in a cupcake pan. You’ll want to do several layers, making sure you aren’t just putting the layers on top of each other, but side to side… try to not let the same color touch too much within the same cupcake.
Bake your tie-dye cupcakes according to the package directions, then let them cool.
Then, frost your cupcakes! To really highlight the tie-dyed look of these cupcakes, I typically just make them without a cupcake liner and serve on a napkin.
For other fun tie-dye party foods, you can serve rainbow fruit and vegetable trays. You can also tint pasta by adding a few drops of food coloring to pasta and giving it a stir when it’s cooked.
Making breakfast? Tie-dye pancakes by filling a piping bag or squeeze bottle with tinted cake batter, place two or three different colors beside each other, and swirl before they start to cook much.
Tie-Dye Party Favors
The best kind of party favors are the kind of party favors that guests can always use again after the party. One really great favor that works well during and after the party is a tie-dyed apron gift. Depending on the age of your guests and how long your party is going, this could even do double-duty as a party activity and a party favor! Pick up some affordable plain kid’s aprons at a craft store, a tie-dye kit, and you’re all set to go!
Once they’ve been dyed, washed, and dried, the kids can wear them during the other tie-dye party activities to protect their clothing. Plus, they’re just such a beautiful, fun item that they can take home and use again and again.
Another fun dual-purpose activity and favor is to take mini easels and give each child a mini canvas (here’s a fun combo pack of easels and canvases at a great price!). These make a very quick, fun activity, and if done near the start of the party, they’ll be dry enough to take home at the end. Give the kids paint and brushes to create any art they’d like, or even fun tie-dye inspired artwork!
Tie-Dye Party Activities
While many of the party favors can double as party activities during the party, there is one fun tie-dye party activity that is my favorite, hands-down. It is so fun to watch the reactions of the kids as they unveil their creation. This activity is great because it’s suitable for teenagers, tweens, and even little bitty kiddos, making it a fun activity for any age.
To start, pick up a Tie Dye Eggs kit from PAAS. You can find these at most local retailers selling Easter goods, or you can find them here online. I personally recommend picking up a kit for every 1-2 kids that will be at the party, because dyeing will go so much faster if they’re not having to share the items needed to get the eggs done.
To make the tie-dye eggs, you’ll start with the dye tablets. Please note that this package instruction is slightly different than other dye kits you may have used before, even if they’re PAAS-brand kits. Instead of adding vinegar and water, you’ll only be adding 3 Tablespoons of vinegar to each tablet. Skip the water altogether. This is because you’re not dip-dyeing the eggs, but instead using droppers and cloth for the dyeing process. It’ll create an amazing effect. Making sure you read the package directions carefully is a huge help to getting the best possible result.
Every kit comes with a special device for helping with the tie dyeing process, as well as two cloths. To dye the eggs, you’ll dampen the cloth slightly with water and wrap it around the egg very carefully. Then, you’ll take a dropper and insert the dye into the holes in the egg holder. Repeat the process in each hole, using as many colors as you’d like.
I find that the best effect comes from using only three colors at a time. It also helps to stick to colors close together on the color wheel, like red, orange, and yellow, or blue, green, and yellow.
When you’ve finished adding the color, just remove the egg and unwrap it. Ta-dah! Instant tie-dye effect that is stunning and so easy to create.
I don’t know a kid who wouldn’t love creating tie-dye eggs. It’s so simple for young kids and still mind-blowing for the older kids, too. It isn’t just limited to a tie-dye party activity, either. It’s perfect for play dates and sleepovers, too, or even just Easter with the family.
After dyeing the hard-boiled eggs, kids can peel them, crack them, and enjoy them with lunch!
Tie dye parties are the perfect way to get little artists of all ages involved.
