Have you seen the speckled tees that are appearing everywhere? It seems like I can’t go into a store without seeing the adorable tee shirts that look a little bit like robin’s eggs. Start off with a clean white tee shirt (or a clean black tee shirt if you prefer a bleached speckle instead of a painted speckle). Place your clean white tee shirts onto a towel or other protected surface– you will get dye or bleach on your surfaces if you don’t! Make sure you’re opting for an old towel for this one.

Prepare your dye according to package directions, or place a small amount of bleach in a disposable container. If using bleach, be sure to wear gloves or otherwise protect your skin. Take a clean toothbrush and dip it into your clothing dye or bleach.

Run your fingernail across the bristles of the brush, directing the splatter toward the shirt. This will flick dye onto the shirt in a random pattern. You may get a few large drips that add character, but if you’d prefer to prevent these, hold a towel directly under the tee shirt with your other hand to catch them so only the small speckles land on the tee shirt.

Repeat with additional colors as desired. I found that two or three colors was really the sweet spot– any more and it looks a little muddy.

Following the instructions on the dye, wash your shirt for wear. I love using Member’s Mark Ultimate Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent every time I wash my clothes. When I’m trying to get out stains from popsicles or mud, or any of the other wear-and-tear kind of stains my son’s tee shirts see on a daily basis, it gets stains out the first time.
