If you listen to the radio, you’ve probably heard of twenty øne piløts. Well, unless somebody stole your car radio. I’m just going to warn you now, this post is going to be filled with some twenty øne piløts references. If you aren’t a twenty øne piløts fan, that’s okay– this mocktail would be SO delicious for summertime parties and pool parties, but if you are a twenty øne piløts fan, you’re going to get what I’m saying.
If you’ve been a twenty øne piløts fan for awhile, you’ve probably heard the song… not the Taco Bell Saga but the other one. Coconut coconut sharks in the water, coconut coconut sharks in the water, coconut coconut sharks in the water, frens. Yeah, that one. Well, after my son and I got to see twenty øne piløts in concert, I decided we definitely needed to make a twenty øne piløts-inspired drink to share our story of seeing them live, and that’s how the Coconut Sharks in the Water mocktail was born!
I think at some point or another, we all wish that we could turn back time to the good old days… and in some ways, this coconut sharks mocktail WILL take you back. Back to before twenty øne piløts was playing in sold-out arenas, back to childhood days spent at the pool.
When I first heard the song Coconut Sharks in the Water on youtube, I knew it would make a fun drink. I’ve always really wanted to make a suspended shot drink… it’s one where there’s some sort of liquid held in a shot glass upside down, hiding a little surprise for your drink. Plus, it’s really not difficult to make at all.
To make the suspended shot, pour a partial shot of grenadine in a tall shot glass. Turn a larger glass (we used a mini mason jar, but pick your own favorite small glass) upside down on top of the shot. Press the shot of grenadine and the jar together as you carefully turn the shot upside down. Try to let as little leak out as possible.
Working quickly, pour 1/3 of a shot of cream of coconut in the bottom of the glass around the shot glass. This will help seal the grenadine in, and it will give the “coconut” part to a Coconut Shark in the Water. Do you see how the shot glass kind of forms a “shark fin” over the glass?
Fill the area surrounding the glass with 2-3 shots of any blue sports drink. This makes a lovely little ocean for your Coconut Sharks to swim in.
There is something really special about how you drink this drink, but before I show you, I really want to tell you about my son and I seeing twenty øne piløts in Wichita. Oh. My. Gosh. Y’all. This was an amazing show and I seriously don’t have words to express it.
My kiddo has been a fan of twenty øne piløts for quite awhile. He eats, breathes, and spends all his time listening to and thinking about them. Every haircut, we have to take pictures of Josh Dun to make sure he gets his hair cut the exact same way. We were even Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph for Halloween this year, at his request.
He spends hours upon hours every week watching and re-watching twenty øne piløts to see Josh’s drumming style to copy the mannerisms. It’s just a huge, huge part of my kiddo’s life.
So when we missed the sold-out show in Kansas City (it simply sold out too fast for us to get a ticket), we were so blessed to be gifted tickets to the Wichita show from an amazing angel who really wanted him to get to see twenty øne piløts.
Seriously, Tyler and Josh (and their entire crew, and Judah and the Lion, and Jon Bellion) put on an amazing show. I really hesitate to spoil any of the amazing things that Josh and Tyler do in their show, but there are drum battles. There are moments where they’ll disappear and reappear elsewhere, and OH MY GOSH, the well-known backflips off of the Piano…. Add in the amazing music and you’re in for a really great show.
They perform for the audience, in the audience, above the audience, literally on top of the audience. Let’s just say there were giant hamster balls, drum platforms, all of that….
The night seriously blew my kiddo’s mind. I mean, not literally, because that would be weird, but figuratively. It really blew mine, too. In many ways, I like twenty øne piløts because he likes twenty øne piløts, but honestly, I’d like them even if he didn’t. They’re talented, or as so many in the Clique would say, “sick as frick.” They’re great role models. They speak deeply to things we all wrestle with, but they also speak to faith, strength in light of anxiety, love, and so much more. Who wouldn’t love that?
Back to the mocktail, though. You’ve got coconut creme for a very coconutty shark, a little blue sports drink for some blue, blue ocean water, and you’ve got a little bit of grenadine suspended under a shot glass shark fin…
To drink a Coconut Shark in the Water, simply pull up on the grenadine shot. It releases the “blood” into the water. Somebody has a tear in their heart, but not from love. From a coconut shark.
If you’d like, you can top it off with more blue sports drink and swish it around before you drink to mix in some of the coconut creme. Really, though, you can just drink and enjoy! It’s a super-simple drink that will have you… well, I was going to say singing this drink’s praises from the trees, but any self-respecting twenty øne piløts fan knows trees are for sitting in silence…
