I remember it like it was yesterday… I was pushing the cart through Walmart, smiling at my sweet baby boy, when it happened. He puked. All over him, all over me, all over everywhere. While I often brought a change of clothes for him in the diaper bag (just in case!), I didn’t happen to bring any change of clothes for me. It meant that while he was nice and clean, I wash pushing the cart through the rest of Walmart with a lovely splatter all over my shirt. Yuck.
It wasn’t long after that when we found ourselves back at Walmart. I heard the tell-tale rumblings, and then there was the unmistakable smell. My sweet boy needed a diaper change– no problem. I opened the diaper bag and realized I had made a classic rookie mistake. I had used the last diaper, without stocking any extras. Luckily, we were at Walmart so I could buy some for a quick change and diaper restock.
At the time, my go-to choice was Huggies Snug & Dry Ultra. They have a great value pack that’s only available at Walmart, and is only $7.97, which is super affordable!
The two events immediately encouraged me to create a quick change car bag– I never wanted to be the mom walking around the store with that mess all over me, and I never wanted to get someplace that I couldn’t buy diapers when my son needed a change. The car bag was filled with my immediate essentials for those emergency moments.
My car bag started with a small bag I already had on hand, but any small purse or diaper bag would work well. The next item that I for sure needed was a small stock of Huggies Snug & Dry Ultra and some wipes. While I always kept a few in my main diaper bag, these were extras stashed in the car for those emergency moments where I realized there were no diapers in the bag.
I love that Snug & Dry Ultra has a quilted liner– it’s unique to the Snug & Dry Ultra diapers, and it locks away wetness better! The Leak Lock System provides up to 12 hours of protection, which helps prevent leaks.
I also love that there’s some great value– it’s a quality diaper at an amazing price. Right now, you can even get a better price on them because there’s a coupon that will save you $2.00 on any one pack of Huggies at Walmart— just click and print!
Some of the sizes (sizes 1 and 2) even have a wetness indicator that turns blue when your baby is ready for a change. That was one of my favorite diaper features, because even at a young age, getting my little one to sit still for diaper changes wasn’t easy! That made it so I never had to change him until it was time.
In addition to diapers, you want a change or two of clothing for your little one. Yes, it’s a good idea to have a change for them in your diaper bag if you have the space, but knowing that there is a change or two in the car is a great addition to peace of mind. I decided to make this car bag for my best friend, who is having her first baby soon! This is one thing I wish someone would have given me and encouraged me to have when I had my son, and I know it’s the perfect gift for anyone expecting a little one soon.
So you’ve got your Huggies Snug & Dry Ultra, and you’ve got your wipes, and you’ve got a couple of changes of clothes for your little one… now what?
You’ll definitely want a change of clothes for you (or for the friend you’re making the bag for). You don’t need a full outfit, but trust me, a shirt is a good choice. Don’t be that mom walking around Walmart with puke all over her shirt. Trust me.
Pick other emergency items you’ll need– I like a backup charger (no one wants to be stuck on the side of the road with no battery and a baby to care for– and things happen) and a cozy blanket. But really, you’d want to make sure you have the basics– not in place of a diaper bag, but as a supplement just in case you need it.
Don’t go overboard, just grab the essentials– you’ll want to keep your bag something slim to fit under the seat of the car or stashed in the back, just for when you need it.
Now, whenever you have an emergency, you’re all set. I remember the first few months of my son’s life, and how unprepared I sometimes felt, especially when major yuck would occur (like the stories I shared about those crazy trips to the store)… making sure I had a car bag on hand was really helpful to feeling more prepared, and as a new mom with her first child, any little thing that aids preparedness is a big help.

I have been that Mom too!! I love the tip to pack at least a shirt for yourself just in case you are the target! Great advice! Love the idea of this extra bag for those times! #client

Another item I would add are those disposable diaper sacks in case there isn’t a trash handy to toss it in. I’ve used them for soiled clothes as well as diapers to keep the smell at bay until I can get home. I’m sure there are different kinds, but the ones I use smell like baby powder.
That is a GREAT idea! Thank you for adding that– you’re right, disposable diaper sacks are a perfect addition.
Great tips! And live your Jamberry Nail Wraps!
Thank you! 🙂 I thought they were pretty cute 😉
Add a towel….car vomit moments I always wish I had a towel to cover it all with filled get home
Fantastic addition to the kit! I totally agree, a towel is a good one to have!
